Mountain ride Skeble
A tour on an Icelandic pony in an unspoiled mountain landscape is every horse lover's dream. You stay overnight in wooden wigwams in the middle of the wilderness and everyone helps to prepare food over an open fire.
The tour starts at Ammarnäs, a small mountain village at the beginning or end of the road, depending on how you look at it. You have lunch together, then roll up your sleeping bag, pack your saddlebags and mount your pony. Icelandic ponies are so calm and well behaved that even beginners can ride them.
The Vindel mountain region is one of Europe’s largest nature reserves with places that hardly anyone has ever set foot. The tour goes through the mountain birch forest up to the bare mountains above the tree line.
Up in the mountains there are large Sami wooden wigwams where you spend the night. They are situated in places that belonged for generations to the family that runs Fjällhästen AB. Everyone gathers round the fire in the middle of the wigwam and helps to prepare a dinner that usually consists of minced meat ( elk ) with pasta, a hash of smoked reindeer meat fried with diced onions and potatoes or fresh trout.
After a good night’s sleep, the ride continues over the mountains and on past Marsivagge, a bird sanctuary where you can find many wading birds and wild ducks, rock ptarmigan, gulls and rough-legged buzzards. Even golden eagles can be spotted now and then. In good weather you can climb the top of mount Urtsjåkke. You continue your ride through the beautiful mountain valley of Skebleskal where you spend the night near a mountain lakes at an altitude of 850 metres above sea level. On the last day the tour heads back towards Ammarnäs over the gentle, long slopes of mount Jåppen/Gieråive, good for both racking and galloping. Down in the village a sauna and a dinner await you.
