The remoteness of the outer archipelago in the Gulf of Bothnia is a delightful venue for both stimulating conferences and family celebrations. It also forms a comfortable base for groups that want to watch birds, walk or just enjoy this unique landscape. On the outermost cliffs east of Härnösand, some 430 km north of Stockholm, a pilot station was built at the end of the 18th century to guide ships sailing in to Härnösand or up the Ångermanälven river. At that time Härnösand was a vibrant seaport and a centre for education, health care and the church in Norrland. Two hundred years later Härnö pilot station was closed and the building converted into a conference centre. In 2002 two architects, Annika Höök and Göran Nivfors, took over the property. Together with Anna-Lena Lundblad and staff, they have since developed the business and taken it to new levels.
Today, Lotsstugan offers 20 beds in eleven rooms, several conference rooms and a sauna and a leisure department. The dining room, with its panoramic view over the horizon of the Gulf of Bothnia, has a stylish and tasteful design with fine features – a perfect complement to the exciting natural surroundings. This is, quite simply, an ideal venue for small conferences in view of its remote location at the edge of the archipelago. The harmony of the building stimulates creativity, the perfect base for effective and rewarding meetings in an undisturbed setting.
Completing the picture is Lotsstugan’s exciting range of dishes made from local organic and KRAV-labelled ingredients. The food is exquisite and is varied according to the season. On cold winter days, dishes such as fish soup with home-made aioli are on the menu. The autumn menu can include lamb chops from Bredbyn with roasted organic vegetables from local farmers. On crisp spring days, cold-smoked salmon from Härnösand’s excellent smoking house and pie made from home-grown rhubarb are served.
With its location in an exclusive landscape, including the Härnöklubb nature reserve to the south, and with the district’s white-tailed eagles, black grouse and seals as neighbours, environmental protection work comes naturally. Lotsstugan is heated with solar energy and wood pellets, electricity is generated via a share in Härnövind’s wind power plant, and used water is purified to 99 percent via a modern sewage solution.
With this level of commitment and results achieved, it is not surprising that Lotsstugan has won a number of awards in various regional contexts, most recently the hospitality prize, “Värdsbäst 2009”.
